Dear Hamed Sinno,
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all you have done for the ‘hidden’ queer community in Lebanon. Our country has sadly never been a safe place for queer people, and if I am honest I don’t see a near future where it will be. I wholeheartedly hope I am mistaken.
I have met so many people who live their whole lives in Lebanon hiding who they truly are and can only accept themselves and be true to themselves once they move away. I have witnessed so much abuse and hatred towards openly gay classmates and friends, to their faces and behind their backs. It truly breaks my heart. That is why I am so glad you found the courage and support to show us your true self through your music. I hope you hold on to that courage forever and continue representing the queer community in Lebanon. You are an inspiration and we need more people like you.
‘Shim el Yasmine’ (Smell The Jasmine) is to this day one of my favourite songs. It is one of the only gay-themed love songs that I’ve heard in Arabic, and its haunting melody and lyrics have been the background to countless nights in Beirut.
Even though terrible things have happened to people who raised the pride flag at your concerts, I believe in the work you are doing and the message your music holds. Please never stop fighting for queer people in the Arab world. You’ve given my pessimistic heart a bit of hope.
