The Covid-19 pandemic saw unprecedented innovation, funding and development of new vaccines in record time. But their roll-out was anything but equal, leaving millions of vulnerable people without access to life-saving treatment. The International Treatment Prevention Coalition, a world leader in medical equity, wanted to bring this issue to the world’s attention and lobby the World Trade Organisation for change. We helped them supercharge their campaign to protect millions of people, taking Make Medicines Affordable to a global audience.

Global media coverage
Our work led to great media coverage in Nigeria, the home country of the WTO Chief, applying pressure for action.
Rallied active support with allies in the Global North
Landing media coverage in Devex & the Guardian helped inspire more action from advocates.
Vaccine patents waived at the WTO
Despite much opposition, a waiver on the patents for Covid-19 vaccines was passed at the WTO.

The challenge

The TRIPS Waiver Agreement was implemented in 1995 by the WTO to protect global pharmaceutical companies from competition by mandating intellectual property rights. During Covid-19, this created crises, as emerging markets were inevitably the worst affected as wealthier Global North countries bought up enough vaccines to vaccinate their populations multiple times over. For the majority of countries around the world however, there was little to no option.

The solution

We knew that to cut through the noise of the pandemic, we needed to communicate a simple message to the right audience. That’s when ‘Make Medicines Affordable’ (MMA) was born, harnessing the power of integrated media to raise the global profile of this injustice.

Over 18 months, MMA received coverage across the world, building  insurmountable pressure, ultimately leading to a full reform of the TRIPS Agreement, opening the door for local affordable vaccine production, impacting millions of lives.

ITPC commissioned Shape History to develop the Make medicines affordable campaign to 1) Increase awareness of the issue by increasing the MMA share of voice in the conversation, and 2) Increase support for TRIPS reform within HICs by demonstrating the consequences of global vaccinations by 2023.
