Today, with the support of children’s charity hospice, Shooting Star Chase, we launch this year’s alternative Christmas ad. Bringing to life the true story of the Barker family - let’s make sure that families facing their first Christmas since losing a loved one, don’t have to do so alone. Summary: Inspired by the untimely loss of someone close to Shape History we wanted to create a piece for Christmas 2017 that ensures the many families facing their first Christmas since losing a loved one, don’t have to do so alone. Together with children’s hospice, Shooting Star Chase, we launched the alternative Christmas ad. #FirstChristmas

Emote: Exploring the themes of bereavement and personal loss, this film told the moving story of a heartbroken father who is struggling to come to terms with the passing of his son due to cancer.  In a time of great need his wife and daughter pull together to create a festive surprise providing a heart-warming conclusion.

Educate: From the video the audience were directed to Shooting Star Chase’s website. The popularity of this film saw the hospice have their highest level of Unique Visitors of the year.

Action: With increase in visitors Shooting Star Chase also saw an increase in donations.

Result: This film has been one of the most positively received in our history touching hundreds of thousands of people over the festive period. Ultimately, the video received 1,213,000 views and 17, 696 shares across all formats.

Summary: We wanted to create a Christmas ad which reminded our viewers of the true meaning of Christmas. Summer is living with a life limiting condition; together with Shooting Star Chase we gave her the opportunity to share her amazing gift and be the star of the show. We created an emotive piece of content, supporting assets as well as consulting and strategising with Shooting Star Chase on their integrated #MagicOfChristmas campaign.

Emote: Summer lives with a life limiting condition and so often is too unwell to commit to her school performances. Together with kids’ hospice Shooting Star Chase, we gave Summer the opportunity to perform her favourite Christmas song and be the star of the show. We also wanted to show the work Shooting Star Chase do behind the scenes which goes into give children like Summer the opportunity to do what many other kids take for granted.

Educate: From the video, audiences were directed to Shooting Star Chase’s website where they could find out more about Summer’s story, and more about the amazing work Shooting Star Chase do. We also took beautiful photographs which were used within Shooting Star Chase’s direct mail package.

Action: The video saw lots of people engaging, sharing Summers story and donating to the work Shooting Star Chase do.


10-year-old Summer is living with a life-limiting condition, but with the help of our Hospice at Home team she’s able to make the most of every moment. Donate today to help us continue to provide this vital service.
